Natural portals

Natural portals are the ones that open on their own near players. Everything here can be changed in the Configuration, for the whole game or for one dimension.

When one opens

Every 30 seconds (check_interval_ticks), each player has a 0.5 percent chance (spawn_chance) that a portal opens near them. After one, that player waits 10 minutes (player_cooldown_ticks) before the next. By default that is roughly one portal every hour or two of play for each player.

A portal opens between 8 and 32 blocks from the player (min_distance, max_distance). A player has at most one natural portal near them (max_portals_per_player), and max_portals_in_dimension can limit the portals open in a whole dimension (0 means no limit).

Portals are only opened by a player's presence. A world with nobody in it gets none.

Where it opens

If no free spot is found after a few tries, no portal opens that time.

Which tiers

The tier is drawn first, with the same chance for each tier the dimension lists. Then the boss is drawn among the bosses of that tier, using the weights of Raid Dens. When Raid Dens has no boss at that tier (tiers 6 and 7 have none), a boss is built from a random Pokemon. Legendary, mythical, Ultra Beast and paradox Pokemon are never part of that draw, see Legendary portals.

The tiers of the dimension are the setting tiers. Defaults:

Dimension Tiers Natural portals
Overworld (minecraft:overworld) 1, 2, 3 on
Nether (minecraft:the_nether) 2, 3, 4 on
End (minecraft:the_end) 3, 4, 5 on
Aether (aether:the_aether) 2, 3, 4 on
Twilight Forest (twilightforest:twilight_forest) 2, 4, 6 on
Otherside of Deeper and Darker (deeperdarker:otherside) 1 to 7 on
Moon of Ad Astra (ad_astra:moon) 1, 2 on, one portal at a time
Mars of Ad Astra 2, 3 on, one portal at a time
Mercury and Venus of Ad Astra 3, 4 on, one portal at a time
Glacio of Ad Astra 4, 5 on, one portal at a time
Any other dimension 1, 2, 3 off until enabled = true

None of these mods is needed. A dimension that is not in the game is simply never used. A biome can have tiers of its own too, see Configuration.

Choosing the portals yourself

natural_spawns is a list of descriptions, in the words of the command. When it is not empty, one line is picked at random for each natural portal:

natural_spawns = ["random 3 fire", "arcanine 5 auto level=90 shiny=true"]

Looking at what is set

/raidportals list natural shows, for every dimension that has natural portals, the tiers it can draw. /raidportals spawn natural opens a natural portal near you right now, with the settings of the dimension you are in.
